The Universal Grate 800 is a flueless gas grate for a traditional double-sided wood-burning fireplace. It goes into the opening you already have, so both rooms keep their view of the flames, and the old chimney is closed off. Black ceramic coals sit on black ash with white stones around them. A piezo spark lights it, on LPG or natural gas.
The firebox is not included: the grate goes into your existing double-sided fireplace.
ONE FIRE, BOTH SIDES
The table is set on the far side, the lounge is cosy on this one, and the same fire glows for everyone. With the grate in your double-sided fireplace there are no logs to haul in and no fire to build. Just light it, sit down and let supper run late.
The face-brick fireplace opening, timber mantel, furniture and décor are not included. The grate goes into your existing double-sided fireplace; a SAQCC Gas registered installer connects it.
BEFORE YOU CONVERT
THE FIREPLACE
It retrofits into a traditional double-sided wood-burning fireplace, and the existing chimney is closed off for this flueless grate. The firebox is not included, so measure your opening before you order.
THE ROOM
Without permanent ventilation the room must be at least 198 m³. Chad-O-Chef suggests it for rooms up to 438 m³ (132 m²), depending on insulation, materials and climate. Never in a bedroom, bathroom, toilet or sauna.
THE GAS
Choose LPG or natural gas, and have it installed for that gas type by a SAQCC Gas registered installer. A piezo spark lights it, and an oxygen depletion pilot is part of its safety setup.
MEASURE YOUR OPENING
Check the grate against your fireplace opening.
The grate is 815 mm wide and 560 mm deep, and 220 mm high to the top of its tabs; the control knobs are not in these sizes. Measure your double-sided opening, and have your gas installer check the fit and the clearances.
GOOD TO KNOW
Read your instruction manual with your gas installer before you plan the conversion.

The existing chimney is closed off, because this is a flueless gas grate. Plan it with your installer as part of the conversion.
LPG or natural gas. The installation must suit your gas type, so confirm yours with us before you order. It lights with a piezo spark.
Chad-O-Chef suggests it for rooms up to 438 m³ (132 m²); the right size depends on insulation, materials and climate. Without permanent ventilation the room must be at least 198 m³, and your installer calculates the ventilation for a smaller room.
Chad-O-Chef gives a maximum gas input for this grate, not a certified heat output, so we do not list a heat output and the Output Calculator has no figure for it. Ask us, and we will help you compare it with your rooms.
An oxygen depletion system on the pilot (ODS, minimum 18.5% oxygen) is part of its safety setup. It must not go in a bedroom, bathroom, toilet or sauna, and a SAQCC Gas registered installer for your gas type installs it.
Keep combustible material 100 mm from its sides, a combustible floor (carpet included) 100 mm away, curtains and fabric 500 mm from its sides, combustible furniture 1,000 mm in front and the ceiling 800 mm away. A heat-resistant masonry shelf may sit 500 mm above it.
Black ceramic ash with black ceramic coals and a white stone surround. Chad-O-Chef also makes a fire glass finish: ask us about it before you order.
Chad-O-Chef gives a two-year guarantee on the fireplace. Its terms and conditions apply; ask us for the full terms.
Yes. Send a photo and the measurements of your fireplace opening for a product and configuration quote. We do not install: arrange the conversion with an independent, SAQCC Gas registered installer for your gas type.
